DESTINATIONS

Four places to consider for your first Bhutan trip.

Start with western Bhutan. Add more distant places only if you have enough time to enjoy them.

Punakha Dzong and river
Tiger's Nest monastery in Paro
PARO

Your gateway — and much more.

Paro combines the airport, traditional architecture, monasteries and Bhutan’s most recognised hike: Taktsang, or Tiger’s Nest. Most itineraries spend at least two nights here.

  • Tiger’s Nest
  • Rinpung Dzong
  • National Museum
  • Paro Valley
Bhutanese valley landscape
THIMPHU

A capital that still feels unmistakably Bhutanese.

Thimphu mixes government, monasteries, markets, museums and contemporary Bhutanese life. It is the natural first stop after Paro for many travellers.

  • Buddha Dordenma
  • Tashichho Dzong
  • Memorial Chorten
  • Craft & market stops
Punakha Dzong beside the river
PUNAKHA

Warmer air, two rivers and one spectacular dzong.

Cross Dochula from Thimphu and drop into the subtropical Punakha valley. It adds scenery, history and a very different atmosphere to a western Bhutan trip.

  • Punakha Dzong
  • Dochula Pass
  • Suspension bridge
  • Village walks
Phobjikha Valley
PHOBJIKHA

A peaceful place to slow down.

The broad glacial valley around Gangtey suits travellers with extra time. In winter it is associated with Bhutan’s black-necked cranes.

  • Gangtey Monastery
  • Valley walks
  • Black-necked cranes in season
  • Slower rural atmosphere
